the mind of her love slip away

Tending carefully to the empty oyster shell

She feeds him spooning slowly

vegetables have long since left the menu

Now rejected in fruitlessly decay the daily apple

finally failing to keep the doctor away

Chocolate and crust less marmalade sandwiches

provide no indulgent sustenance

Dementia removing the possibility of chewing

increasing  the possibility of choking

Nutrition sucked is a straw not to be clutched at

a feeble buoyancy aid rejected by this Triton

A man of the sea A man of the Sun

withdrawn from both life forces

She has stopped reading Masefield

for he knows he will not go down to the sea again

Silver spooning memories back into his soul

Luxury from a small ocean blue tub

pearlescent cool creamy cream

In memory of my father

* Selkies are said to live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land, I am affected by the drug Thalidomide and have seal like upper limbs. Feeding my father was not easy.

* Joe's Ice cream is a brand of ice cream famous in Wales and when my father moved from England it was his biggest pleasure.

Dementia often ends self starvation, or so it seems in my experience. 

Let us hope the Government finally sees the relevance to putting dementia higher on the research finance agenda.
